1. What is a “dust of snow”? What does the poet say has changed his mood? How has the poet’s mood changed?
Ans.- A “dust of snow” means the fine, smooth
particles or flakes of snow. The “dust of snow” changed the poet’s mood. The
poet’s mood changed from sad to happy. He was holding the day in disappointment
when this dust of snow fell on him, he felt refreshed and wanted to enjoy the
rest of the day.
2. How does Frost present nature in this poem? The following questions may help you to think of an answer.
(i) What are the birds that are usually named in
poems? Do you think a crow is often mentioned in poems? What images come to
your mind when you think of a crow?
(ii) Again, what is “a hemlock tree”? Why doesn’t
the poet write about a more ‘beautiful’ tree such as a maple, or an oak, or a
pine?
(iii) What do the ‘crow’ and ‘hemlock’ represent –
joy or sorrow? What does the dust of snow that the crow shakes off a hemlock
tree stand for?
Ans.- Frost the nature in quite different
manner in the poem.
(i) The poems
based on nature, poets use the birds and trees those are known for their
beauties like nightingales, parrot, sparrows cuckoo and trees with fruits and
beautiful flowers. But Frost has used a crow in this poem which is a symbol of
bad omen. It brings sorrowful thought and unpleasant imaginations to our mind.
(ii) The poet has also written about a
hemlock tree, which is a poisonous plant with small white flowers. The poet did
not use an oak, pine or maple tree. Instead of these trees, he chose the
hemlock tree to show his sad mood and feelings.
(iii) The crow and the hemlock tree both represent sorrow
and grief. The dust of snow is the symbol of natural joy and energy. The dust
of snow that is shaken off by the crow from the hemlock stands for happiness or
we can say healing power of nature that changed the poet’s mood
3. Have there been times when you felt depressed or hopeless? Have you experienced a similar moment that changed your mood that day?
Ans.- There have been many times when I felt sad
and hopeless. These situations come due to loneliness and sometimes due to
different attitude and behaviour of other people. It was a time when I was very
sad I was walking on the road, I saw a bird was feeding their children with
great love. This little moment changed my mood and I felt very happy for the
rest of the day.
