1. How did the lady manage to get an invitation for a luncheon from the writer? 

Ans. She sent him a letter telling him she had just read his new novel and would like to have a little chat with him if he would give her a little luncheon.

2. It is evident that the writer was disappointed by the appearance of the lady. How do we learn this? 

Ans.  The writer was disappointed by the appearance of the lady because she was not so young as he expected. She was a woman about forty.

3. The writer says "Panic seized me." When and why did this happen?

Ans.  Panic seized him because it was not a question how much money he would have leftover for the rest of the month, but whether he had enough money to pay the bill.

4. "Oh, no, I'm not hungry, you see, I don't eat luncheon. I have a cup of coffee in the morning and then dinner, but I never eat more than one thing for luncheon. I was speaking for you." Who said this? What is ironical in this statement? 

Ans.  This is dramatic irony. It based on the strong contrast between what the woman keeps saying and what she actually does.

5. "Today, she weighs twenty-one stones." Why is the writer happy that the lady is overweight?
