1. Introduction -

 “Population problem is India’s cancer”.

After the slavery of two hundred years, India had become very poor. We got freedom in 1947. We have a number of problems. The most important among them is the population problem. Our population is increasing at very high rate. It is a burning problem. It is a big obstacle in the way of national development.

2. Various problems -

     “India is a rich country,

       where poor people live”.

There are so many problem are being faced by our country after independence. They are unemployment, population, prize rising, terrorism, corruption etc. but among them the most explosive problem is the problem of uncontrolled growth of population. If this rate of growth continues, a day will came when it will be difficult for us to survive in India.

3) Meaning of the problem -

“It is very serious that we are

     adding one Australia per year.”

                                      Indira Gandhi.

The meaning of the problem is that the birth rate has increased several times than the death rate. At the time of independence we have the population of 40 crore but now it is more than 135 crore. If this problem is not solved quickly our country will soon be ‘the country of poors’.

4) Causes of over population-

     “Indian beds are more fertile

       than the Indian fields”.

There are many reason of over population:

·        Climatic condition- Over country is hot and climate is very favourable for reproduction. So the population is increasing.

·        Medical facilities- As science is progressing the death rate is falling due to better medical facilities and birth rate is increasing.

·        Early marriages- The village people marry their children at a very early age. It place great contribution in increasing population.

·        Orthodox mentality- India is very orthodox country. Village people think the children are the gift of God and to control population is a sin.

·        Desire for male child- There is a religious thought that only a son can perform the funeral Rights of the parents so having a son is must. This thought also increasing the population.

·        Illiteracy- The most important reason is the lack of education. There illiteracy keeps them in dark. They don’t know the benefits of small family.

5) Bitter effects of the problem-

    “Excess of everything is harmful”.

·        Scanty food- The population is growing rapidly. The quantity of the food is same but it is to be distributed among all of them. So the food is scanty.

·        Crowd- We see a big crowd everywhere buses, Trains, schools, collage are crowded with youths.

·        Joblessness- We see thousands of  youth come out with their degrees but all of them can’t be employed.

·        Terrorism- The jobless youth commit crimes and create problems and not only for their families but also for government.

·        Set- back- The government is thinking of advancement but the economic condition is a set-back to population.

 6) Remedies-

“Where there is a will, there is a way”.

The problem is critical but it can be solved by awareness and few efforts.

·        The government is trying to popularise family welfare programmes by this new slogan-

  “One family one child”

·        NGOS are also doing good work in family welfare.

·        Government has made it compulsory that a girl under 18 and a boy under 21 can’t be married.

·        Economic condition should be improved.

7) Conclusion –

“Rome was not built in a day,

Great works are not child’s play”.

The growing population is great burning issue of India. We can’t develop socially, economically, politically without having full control over this problem. We should obey the government by adopting the methods of family planning. If this problem is solved then every problem will be minimized and there will be a new paradise on the earth.
